Allergens
New Allergen Rules
From the 1 October 2021, how some food products should be labelled with allergen information will be changing. This is following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse. The teenager died after suffering an allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette. You can find out more about Natasha’s Story on the NARF website.
It is important that allergen information for all foods is communicated accurately and clearly to your customers. The upcoming changes specifically applies to pre packed for direct sale (PPDS) foods. This can include;
- Products that are made, packed and sold on your premises
- Prepacked products sold on your own market stall
- Products you buy in, repackage and sell on your premises
- Hot food that is packaged or wrapped before the customer orders it and is sold on your premises.
If you’re not sure if the new rules apply to, you can use this decision tool to help.
Any business that produces PPDS food will be required to label it with:
- the name of the food
- a full ingredients list,
- with allergenic ingredients emphasised within the list.
For further guidance and information, visit the Food Standards Agency Website.

Allergens Direct
1-2% of adults and 5-8% of children have food allergies and many more have intolerances. Can you be sure that you are allergy aware when preparing food in your business? Especially when around 10 people in the UK die from an allergic reaction to food every year.
This important issue is at the forefront of consumers’ minds. To keep consumers safe, businesses must provide information on allergenic ingredients. Cornwall Council Public Protection has recently launched a new product, Allergens Direct.
Allergens Direct can help your businesses with practical procedures and policies. Helping to prevent
- providing misinformation
- cross contamination
- and safeguard against a fatal incident
